यों तो शरद पूर्णिमा पूरे देश में किसी न किसी रूप में मनाई जाती है परंतु ब्रज का क्षेत्र होने व विश्वविख्यात ताजमहल के कारण शरद पूर्णिमा का आगरा में महत्व ज्यादा है और पूरे वर्ष लोग इसका इंतजार करते हैं। यह तो सर्वविदित ही है कि आश्विन शुक्ल पक्ष की पूर्णिमा का चाँद इस दिन पूरी 16 कलाओं से युक्त होता है और उसकी किरणें धरा को शीतलता प्रदान करती हैं। प्रकृति की मनोरम छटा कुछ ऐसी होती है जैसे आसमान से अमृत वर्षा हो रही हो। बरसात से धुली हुई ताज की सफेद संगमरमर धवल चांदनी में चमकती हुई अति सुंदर लगती है। आगरा की भाषा में इसे चमकी कहते हैं। इस चमकी को देखने के लिए देश विदेश से भारी संख्या में पर्यटक आगरा आते हैं। इसके लिए अब तो अग्रिम बुकिंग हो जाती है।

यह भी कहा जाता है कि शरद पूर्णिमा के दिन भगवान कृष्ण ने गोपियों के साथ महारास किया था। आसमान में चंद्रमा शरद पूर्णिमा को सोलह कलाओं में अलग-अलग रंगों में परिवर्तित होता है। इसीलिए भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने इसीलिए इस रात्रि को महारास लीला के लिए चुना था। ऐसी मान्यता है कि इस रात चंद्रमा की किरणों से अमृत की वर्षा होती है और मां लक्ष्मी पृथ्वी पर आती हैं। इसलिए इस रात्रि को लोग अपने घर की छत पर खीर बनाकर रखते हैं और बाद में खाते हैं। इस रात चांदनी में आयुर्वेद के अनुसार शरद में दिन बहुत गर्म और रात बहुत ठंडी होने के वजह से पित्त या एसिडिटी का प्रकोप ज्यादा होता है। इसके लिए ठंडे दूध और चावल को खाना अच्छा माना जाता है। दूध और चावल से बनी खीर रखने पर चन्द्रमा की किरणों से उसमें अमृत बरसता है ऐसी मान्यता है। चन्द्रमा तत्व एवं दूध पदार्थ समान ऊर्जा धर्म होने के कारण दूध अपने में चन्द्रमा की किरणों को अवशोषित कर लेता है। इस अमृतयुक्त खीर को खाने से उम्र बढ़ जाती है, ऐसा माना जाता है। हिन्दू धर्मशास्त्र में वर्णित कथाओं के अनुसार देवी-देवताओं के अत्यंत प्रिय पुष्प ब्रह्मकमल भी इसी दिन खिलता है। आज से ही पवित्र कार्तिक मास औऱ कार्तिक पूजा भी प्रारंभ हो जाती है।

So on this night people keep kheer on the roof of their house and eat it later. According to Ayurveda in moonlight on this night, due to very hot day and very cold night, there is more outbreak of bile or acidity. For this, eating cold milk and rice is considered good. There is a belief that keeping pudding made of milk and rice makes the nectar rain from the moon’s rays. Because of having the same energy religion as the moon element and milk matter, milk absorbs the rays of the moon in itself. It is believed that eating this nectar made kheer increases the lifespan. According to the stories mentioned in Hindu theology, the flower, very dear to the gods and goddesses, also blooms on this day. The holy Kartik month and Kartik Puja also begin from today.
